Highlands Ranch is one of the largest master planned communities in the country. From what was once ranch/farming land has now been built into a thriving community. Building in Highlands Ranch started in 1981 and as of the 2010 census, there are now 35,716 housing units and a population of 96,713 people.
Highlands Ranch encompasses 24.26 square miles bounded on the West by Santa Fe Drive, the East by Quebec Street, the North by County Line Road, and the South by the Backcountry Wilderness area/ North Castle Pines. Highlands Ranch is located on the Southern end of the Denver Metro area and is about 25 minutes to downtown Denver, 45 minutes to Denver International Airport and 70 minutes to skiing (can take longer depending on the mountain).
Residential / Commercial building in the community is going strong and is estimated to be completed by 2020.
Highlands Ranch has been built out for the homeowner. Major arteries are 3 lanes wide and there are also generously sized bike lane on all major roads. Yes, there are some rush hour back-ups, but they are minimal at best. There is ample entertainment and retail minutes from just about any home here. Also, the 70 miles of interconnected trails throughout the community offers runners and walkers all types of options from semi-flat to challenging routes (natural surface and concrete). And that does not include the 23 or so miles of hiking/ mountain biking trails through the Backcountry Wilderness area. On top of this, there are 23 parks, 2,200 acres of natural open space, two skate parks, an in-line hockey court, four off-leash dog areas, eight lighted tennis courts, three lighted ball fields, and much, much more.
